Q is for Quintessential

November 27, 2008

My first real memory of listening to Queen was probably watching Wayne’s World and listening to Wayne and Garth rock out to Bohemian Rhapsody on tape.

I distinctly remember our sixth grade band playing We Will Rock You. I’m not entirely sure why, as we were not a pep band of any kind. That was the first time I realized there were lyrics to that song other than “we will rock you” repeated over and over.

Queen is a fantastic band. They span so many genres, so many decades, and have influenced so many others that they really are, in my opinion, one of the definitive rock bands. Their performance at Live Aid in 1985 was voted the best live rock performance, ever. Obviously Freddie Mercury, the immortal Freddie Mercury, died in ’91 of AIDS. It’s not quite the real deal, but the recording of their concert at Wembley Stadium is probably the next best thing. This is from Live Aid in 85, also at Wembley:

If you don’t have it, do yourself a favor and get their Greatest Hits collection. It’s great for late night parties, and sing alongs at piano bars.  My personal fave:

Finally, as a last final point for how awesome Queen are: Brian May has a Ph.D. in astrophysics.  Physics and rock and roll unite!
